WHAT IS EXPRESSIVE ARTS?
Expressive Arts is a holistic process in which the use of any creative modality; visual, written, spoken, sound and movement is used to help the access and express emotions. For emotional and physical healing and other challenges you may face with food, your body and your life, the emphasis is placed on expressing and transforming stress-producing emotions.
Expressive Art offers a whole mind/body approach to aid in healing stress and illness. While it can be therapeutic, it is not therapy. Expressive arts can be offered to individuals and groups.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Imagery is the primary language of the body-mind. By using images you are helped to connect with your inner experience both positive and negative, as well as tap into often unknown and unexplored resources and strengths. Visualized imagery expressed through art can activate the body to produce chemical, neural, respiratory, and cellular changes that can boost the immune system and metabolism and potentially alter the course of disease progression, as well as enhance your ability to prompt the body to work cooperatively with medical or psychological treatment.
Drawing an image that represents a less stressful way of responding to a painful or fearful experience activates the RELAXATION RESPONSE. All healing takes place during the Relaxation Response which is also the optimum state for digestion, assimilation and calorie burning.
WHAT IF I CAN'T DRAW?
First, you don't have to be an artist. In fact you don't even have to know how to draw anything to be able to get the benefits from expressive arts. If you can draw a stick figure, lines, dots and scribbles then you have what it takes. It's about the process not the product.
In the process you can connect with a deeper and more authentic self. It allows you to freely express yourself without the boundaries of words or language.
By connecting with your own inner wisdom, it enables you to be more open to seeing options and hearing your inner truth. It also can help you relax, have fun, and create new possibilities for living your life more fully and completely.
